The Searcy County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a “Volksmarch” on Saturday, June 16th in conjunction with the 58th annual Leslie Homecoming. Registration begins at 7:30 AM at the Leslie City Park, with the march starting at 8:00 am.
What is a “Volksmarch” you may ask??
According to the American Volkssport Association (AVA) at http://www.ava.org/clubs/sstrider/what_are.htm, “A volksmarch, literally translated “people’s walk,” is a leisurely walk through a scenic, historic, or interesting area over a pre-determined route. Walks are non-competitive and participants proceed at their own pace. Other volkssports include bicycling, swimming and cross-country skiing. The goal of volkssports is to promote physical fitness and good health by encouraging all people, regardless of age, race, color, creed or economic status, to exercise in a stress-free environment.” According to the AVA at the aforementioned site, “The Volkssport movement began in southern Germany in the 1960s. In 1968, the International Volkssport Verband (IVV) was formed in West Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The IVV has continued to grow and now includes more than 25 countries worldwide. Volkssports were brought to the United States as part of the nation’s Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. The American Volkssport Association became part of the IVV in 1979 and now sponsors more than 550 clubs throughout the U.S.”
Leslie’s first ever Volksmarch will traverse through the quaint and historic town of Leslie, go out into the scenic countryside and then back into Leslie to finish. Strollers are Welcome. Pets are also welcome, but must be on a leash.
Leslie’s Volksmarch will be 5K in distance. The entry fee is only $5.00, Children under 12 are Free. All paying entrants receive a Volksmarch T-Shirt.
